The aggregation function used for the index values for the eight indicators within each domain as well as for the composite index of the eight domains is a simple average or mean score. The simple average of any set of numbers is a familiar measure of the central tendency of the set, with familiar problems. The CIW is a conceptual framework drawing on a broad spectrum of domains of life that has the potential to create an ongoing national dialogue that will influence how Canadians think, feel, and act with regard to their wellbeing and the wellbeing of their communities. The Canadian Index of Well-being (CIW) is a composite index of eight interconnected domains that measures trends in the well-being of Canadians over time.
